Intense whirls of paint captured my gaze as I examined Field with Wheat Stacks, a painting by Vincent Van Gogh.  Recently, like thousands of others, I ventured to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see Van Gogh Up Close – an exhibition of forty paintings from the last four years of his tumultuous life.  After viewing impressive art, I always resolve to start painting again.  Only problem is… I never choose to take action.

I didn’t really give serious thought to “choice” until I attended a Leadercast® sponsored by the Lancaster Chamber and hosted by Willow Valley Retirement Communities.  Six-hundred people attended this event, the largest simulcast in the country held in Willow Valley Retirement Communities’ Cultural Center Theater.   The thought-provoking presentations from inspirational leaders such as John Maxwell focused on “choices”.

A procrastinator when making weighty decisions, I used to take solace in thinking that waiting until tomorrow would provide improved clarity.  Lately though, I’ve learned that there is no better time than today to choose – like finally deciding to resume painting – and actually taking out my brushes and paint.

All of us make choices every day…both minor and significant.  Some choices are made with intention and purpose;  others are just squandered opportunities, a result of not taking action when we’d rather just cling to the status quo.  Deciding to choose is risky, but choosing is far better than waiting too long and having no choice at all.  Choices, right or wrong, when made with positive intention, give birth to knowledge that brings us closer to fulfilling our dreams.
